Philit’s Upcoming Film ‘Makosa ni Yangu’ to Address Kenya’s Rising Femicide

Against the backdrop of rising cases of femicide and intimate partner abuse in Kenya, Phil It Productions has unveiled their next film project, Makosa ni Yangu, premiering on 7 December at Sarit Centre Expo.

Inspired by a true story as narrated by Abel Mutua on his popular Mkurugenzi YouTube channel, Makosa ni Yangu tells the story of Nafisa, a young woman who endures unimaginable abuse at the hands of her partner. As her life spirals into violence, Nafisa faces immense pressure from her family and society to stay silent and endure the abuse, all in the name of family honour. However, she chooses survival over silence, sparking a journey of resilience and self-discovery.

With multiple high-profile femicide cases capturing national attention, and countless others remaining tragically unreported, Makosa ni Yangu speaks to the urgent need for open dialogue, awareness, and change.

“This film is painfully relevant right now,” says Karanja. “With the rising number of femicide cases, it’s clear that we need to have conversations that challenge the status quo and work toward a society where violence is no longer tolerated. Makosa ni Yangu brings this to the forefront.”

Directed by Michael Munyoki (Click Click Bang) and Mkaiwawi Mwakaba, and produced by Denise Kibisu (Click Click Bang), Makosa ni Yangu stars Melisa Lesilale and Pascal Tokodi (Selina) in lead roles, with Beatrice Kamuyu (Faithless) and Brenda Michelle (Zora).

Makosa ni Yangu premiere, dubbed the Trinity Experience, will combine the film’s screening with a storytelling session labelled the Jyuuce Party and a live music concert, the first event of its kind in Kenya, which also aims to attract a historic 6,000 guests.

“This is not just a movie; it’s a reflection of our society,” says Abel Mutua, the story’s creator and creative director. “The stories we tell must be real, they must be brave, and they must push for change. Makosa ni Yangu is one of those stories.”

Makosa ni Yangu is Philit Production’s third feature after A Grand Little Lie and Click Click Bang, which earned Ksh 2.5 million in its opening weekend in 2022.
