StudioCanal has announced the return of Spinners, the acclaimed South African series set in the world of extreme motorsport – spinning – while also unveiling a first-look at the anticipated new season. Filming has wrapped on the second season set to premiere in 2026 on both Canal+ and MultiChoice’s (Showmax and DStv) platforms.
Spinners season 1 followed Ethan, a 17-year-old driver working for a local gang who sees a chance for a better life in spinning, where he can put his driving skills to better use.

In season 2, two years after escaping the violent grip of gang life, Ethan and his friends have become spinning stars in the big city. Fame, love, and happiness finally seem within reach – until a brutal ambush, orchestrated by Ethan’s old gang, shatters their peace. Desperate, Ethan turns to the Maseko clan for help but their protection comes at a heavy cost. Now caught between two rival crime families, can Ethan take the wheel and find his own road?
Cantona James (SAFTA and Silwerskerm nominee Trompoppie) and Chelsea Thomas (Rose d’Or and Seoul nominee Wyfie) reprise their leading roles, while SAFTA winner Brendon Daniels (White Lies) and fan favourite Dillon Windvogel (Blood & Water) also return.
New cast joining Spinners season 2 include SAFTA winner Clementine Mosimane (How to Ruin Christmas) as the matriarch of the Maseko crime family; Mondli Makhoba (Shaka iLembe, The Wife) as her bodyguard; and rising star Luyanda Zwane (Sibongile and the Dlaminis, Shaka iLembe) and African Movie Academy Awards nominee Aphiwe Mkefe (Nkululeko, Kites) as her children.
The eight-part Canal+ Original series is a co-production between Showmax and Canal+. The series is produced by Joachim Landau for Federation Middle East, Africa and Caribbean and co-produced by Locarno, Amiens and FESPACO winner Ramadan Suleman (Zulu Love Letter, Fools) for Natives at Large, a South African full-service film and TV production outfit.
Season 2 is once again co-created by Landau and showrunner Benjamin Hoffman, with Jaco Bouwer (Gaia, Niggies) returning as director and SAFTA winners Matthew Jankes and Sean Steinberg back as head writers.
The first season of Spinners made history as the first African series selected in competition at Canneseries, won Best Foreign TV Series at the Shanghai International TV Festival’s Magnolia Awards, beating Succession, as well as three awards at Dakar Series, including Best Series. It also garnered three South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTA) nominations, among other accolades.
The second season follows the recent acquisition of MultiChoice by Canal+, after which the French media giant reaffirmed its commitment to invest in more world-class African productions such as Spinners and the epic drama Shaka iLembe, not only for African audiences, but also for global distribution. And while questions remain over whether markets outside South Africa – and Francophone Africa where it already actively operates – will see similar levels of investment, Canal+ stated, in the announcement of Spinners season 2, that its ambition is to consolidate the production of Canal+ Original TV series in Africa to eight series per year from all over Africa.
Since 2018, Canal+ has produced 35 original TV series with African talent in 11 different African countries, such as Agent (South Africa), Cacao (Côte d’Ivoire), Ekwi (Gabon, Côte d’Ivoire), Ewusu (Cameroon), Invisibles (Côte d’Ivoire), Lakantane (Senegal), Niabla (Côte d’Ivoire), Or Blanc (Côte d’Ivoire), and Sundance Cinematography Special Jury Prize winner Mami Wata (Gabon).
StudioCanal is handling international distribution for Spinners season 2.
