Netflix Acquires Award-Winning Documentary Short ‘One Last Order’ Co-Directed by Sam Soko

Netflix has acquired the award-winning documentary short One Last Order, produced by Kenya’s LBx Africa and New York’s Insignia Films, for global release.

The film is co-directed by Sam Soko and Lauren DeFilippo, who previously collaborated on the Kenyan documentary feature Free Money, also available on Netflix. Soko and DeFilippo produce alongside Amanda Pollak, who also produced Free Money.

One Last Order captures the heartwarming farewell of Sighle Williams, whose 37 years of service at the window of Mac’s Drive-Thru left a mark on the community of Gainesville, Florida.

“We crossed an ocean for a burger joint. Not a metaphor. An actual drive-thru in Gainesville, Florida, where Sighle Williams hands you your order through a window and somehow leaves you better than she found you,” Soko and DeFilippo said in a joint statement shared with Sinema Focus.

“We went looking for a story and found a practice. Joy, shared daily, with whoever pulls up next. We have carried it with us ever since. We are thrilled Netflix is sharing it with you too.”

Following its international festival run, One Last Order has picked up several honours, including the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary Short, Audience Award and Teen View Award at the Nantucket Film Festival; the Jury Award for Documentary and Audience Award at Aspen Shortsfest; and the Audience Short Film Award at the Miami Film Festival.

According to a statement from LBx Africa, the acquisition “highlights the strength of international creative co-productions and the power of African storytellers shaping universal narratives for a global audience.”

Also acquired by Netflix is An Open Field, the 38-minute documentary short directed by South African filmmaker Teboho Edkins. The film had its world premiere in the Short Documentary Competition at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) in 2025, where it won the IDFA Award for Best Short Documentary.

An Open Field follows Edkins and his father, producer Don Edkins, as they return to the Ethiopian site where his younger brother Max Thabiso Edkins and 156 others were killed in a Boeing 737 MAX crash in 2019. There, they encounter a local community that has continued to mourn the victims alongside their families.

The film is produced by Don Edkins through Day Zero Films and co-produced by Carine Chichkowsky through Survivance.

The Netflix acquisitions also bring together filmmakers with a previous creative history. Don Edkins previously co-produced Akuol de Mabior’s South Sudanese documentary No Simple Way Home alongside Soko and Tiny Mungwe. The film, a co-production involving LBx Africa and STEPS, premiered in the Panorama section of the Berlinale in 2022.

Details regarding the official Netflix streaming launch date for One Last Order will be announced in the coming weeks.
