The series follows the wealthy and influential Dhlomo family as they become embroiled in a deadly power struggle to control the family’s luxury car empire following the death of the family patriarch. According to e.tv, The Four of Us is “Succession meets high-stakes family drama.”
It stars Sindi Dlathu, best known for her role as the ruthless Lindiwe Dlamini in the popular South African telenovela The River. As Busani, the eldest Dhlomo sibling and kingmaker, Dlathu locks horns with her ambitious brother Bobbi, played by S’dumo Mtshali. Thembinkosi Mthembu (Adulting), Rami Chuene (How to Ruin Christmas), Hope Mbhele (Shaka iLembe), Kealeboga Masango (Youngins) and Dumisani Dlamini (Adulting) complete the ensemble cast.
In his most recent role before The Four of Us, Mtshali plays the now infamous Jonasi Gomora in Netflix’s South African hit The Polygamist. Released on 12 June, the series debuted at number four on Netflix’s Global Top 10 Non-English TV chart in its first week before climbing to number two, recording 93.4 million hours viewed in its first two weeks.
The series has also sparked much talk online, drawing reactions from viewers across Africa and internationally, including Joe Jonas, Taraji P. Henson, Sherri Shepherd and comedian KevOnStage.
Seeing the success and virality of The Polygamist, it’s likely that Netflix is betting on Mtshali’s current momentum to secure another hit with The Four of Us. Already, the streamer appears to be positioning the show for maximum visibility on the platform.
But Netflix isn’t the only bet here. The Four of Us is taking over the prime-time slot previously occupied by Scandal!, the long-running soap opera that has been on air for more than two decades.
And Tshedza Pictures, the production company behind The Four of Us, is no stranger to creating audience favourites. A longtime collaborator of MultiChoice, the company’s biggest titles include The River, which proved so successful that MultiChoice adapted it in three territories: Kina in Kenya, Wura in Nigeria and O Rio in Angola. On Showmax, Tshedza’s Adulting and Youngins ranked among the platform’s most-watched titles.
Then again, like The Polygamist before it, Netflix gives The Four of Us the kind of reach that can turn a regional success into a global hit.
