Daudi Anguka is set to make his Showmax debut with the new drama-thriller series, Mizani, premiering on 5 February.
Set in Mombasa’s criminal underbelly, Mizani follows a journalist who goes up against a powerful, politically backed organ trafficking ring to save his kidnapped daughter. As he digs deeper, he uncovers a web of corruption, power plays, and shocking secrets.

The series stars Michael Saruni (The Chocolate Empire), Stephanie Maseki (Mkasi), Kieth Chuaga (Jiji), Bhavnesh Chudasama (Subterranea), Jack Mutinda (It’s A Free Country), Denis Humphrey (Sultana), Anita Wawuda (Jiji), Reinhard Inzai Bonke (Kam U Stay), Mehul Malde (Crime & Justice), Kathleen McKenzie (Maria), Ashik Ali (Zari), Mariam Mzee (Sultana), Patrick Owino (Zari), Victor Opondo (Mvera), and Nima Kubo (Karata).
Mizani is produced by Anguka under his banner AR Film Productions. Known for his Swahili storytelling, Anguka has produced shows such as the long-running Kalasha-winning Swahili telenovela Pete and Sanura. His short film Zilizala (2017) won Best Indigenous Language Movie (Swahili) at 2017 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), while his debut feature Mvera, was Kenya’s submission to the 2024 Oscars.
Fittingly, according to Anguka, Mizani expands on the organ tracking theme introduced in Mvera.
“Organ trafficking is a real and growing issue, not just in Kenya but across Africa,” says Anguka. “I wanted to challenge myself creatively and tell a darker, more urgent story that not only entertains but also educates viewers.”
Anguka adds that Mizani represents the scales of life where people make choices that can save or destroy them.
The series is directed by Janet Chumbe (4Play), Eric Mdagaya (Mkasi), Isaya Evans (Reckless) and Bill Jones Afwani (18 Hours), who also serves as writer alongside Brian Munene (Subterranea), Ambat Rioba Mann (Jiji), and Kevin Amakobe.
