“Roses are red, violets are blue, no plans for Valentine’s? No worries, Netflix has got you!” Premiering on 14 February, South African rom-com A Soweto Love Story follows three single brothers who must compete to the altar when their mother sets marriage as the only criteria to win the family home. If this sounds familiar, it’s probably because you’ve watched this story before in another Netflix film – A Naija Christmas released in 2021. It would seem that adaptations are here to stay, especially for successful stories that can be replicated in other regions.

Kenya’s first military series Mpakani: Story of the North, which was initially slated to release in January, finally lands on 14 February. Directed by Victor Gatonye, this follows six special forces soldiers posted in northern Kenya, as they hunt down a dangerous terrorist called Burhaan (played by Bilal Mwaura).

Revisit our review of ‘Mpakani: Story of the North’ here.

The long awaited remake of a live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender arrives on 22 February boasting a whooping record-breaking $15 million dollar per-episode budget. There’s hope that this version will correct M Night Shyamalan’s 2010 critically panned and box office failure of the same property.

In Tyler Perry’s crime thriller Mea Culpa, premiering on 23 February, Kelly Rowland plays a criminal defense attorney who gets entangled in her own dangerous desires when she takes on the case of a charming artist accused of murder

On 24 February, catch the biggest names light up the red carpet and the stage at The 30th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG Awards).

Meryl Streep cult classic The Devil Wears Prada, also starring Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt, lands on 7 February. Watch Macaulay Culkin in his life-defining role as Kevin McCallister in the Christmas classic Home Alone and its sequel Home Alone II: Lost In New York both dropping on 1 February.

On 15 February, popular hip-hop artist Vince Staples gets his own series, The Vince Staples Show, created by Staples himself and executive-produced by Black-ish creator and director Kenya Barris. In this satirical comedy, we follow Staples as he navigates the challenges of everyday life where anything that can go wrong usually does.

Also catch Perfume: The Story of a Murderer directed by Tom Tykwer on 12 February, Tykwer is also known for mentoring Tosh Gitonga on Nairobi Half Life, and Somali-Kenyan film Bufis on 22 February.
