Marianne Nungo (Supa Modo), Nyokabi Macharia (Nawi), Foi Wambui (Subterranea), Lorna Lemi (The Dog) and Eunice Mwabe will lead Followers, an upcoming play from Fifth Wall Productions set to stage over the Easter weekend from 27–29 March at Braeside Lavington.

Followers is described as a “reimagining of the Passion, told through the eyes of five women trapped in the wrong place at the right time.” On the night of Jesus’ arrest, five women — Mama Simon (Macharia), Mary (Lemi), Anna (Wambui), Esther (Mwabe) and Claudia (Nungo) — find themselves in forbidden temple grounds where they face a deadly choice: death by government law outside or religious law inside.

Set against the backdrop of government crackdowns and religious tension, the play weaves together an ancient narrative with modern Kenyan culture while addressing contemporary social issues.

“While history often overlooks their perspectives, this play uses the female narrative to humanise a moment of intense political and religious tension, making it a ‘mirror to society’ for modern Kenyan women,” reads a statement from Fifth Wall Productions.

Supporting cast include Francis Ouma (Volume) in a triple role as Simon Peter, Barrabas and Judas Iscariot; Will Mwangi (Crime & Justice) as a Roman herald; Esther Kazungu and Sage Chemutai as Roman officials and Bril Kenneth as the herald’s aide.

Followers is written by Mercy Mutisya, known for her theatre work including Free Me and Too Early for Birds’ Tom Mboya, and in television such as Untying Kantai and Tuki, alongside Eunice Mwabe. Agnes Kola (Click Click Bang) directs while Joy Oww produces.
