Film directors, producers and writers will now get access to affordable insurance following a new deal between the Female Filmmakers in Kenya Association (FEFKA) and Britam Insurance.
Marking a major milestone in Kenya’s creative industry, FEFKA President and film producer Sarah Owendi noted that the move will give its members affordable, quality and timely health care, helping to reduce work and project down times. With this partnership, FEFKA becomes the first filmmakers’ association in the country to secure an affordable medical insurance scheme for its members.

“This sets a powerful precedent, proving that creative associations can drive meaningful change, advocate for their members and create long-term value through strategic collaborations,” Owendi said.
Through the initiative, members of the association can now access medical insurance from as low as KSh 6,000 annually, making healthcare coverage attainable for filmmakers at different stages of their careers.
The cover offers three flexible packages with varying levels of benefits to suit individual needs, including inpatient and outpatient medical cover, maternity benefits, dental and optical cover, radiology and diagnostic services, ambulance services, last expense and funeral benefits and COVID-19 cover and other essential riders
According to Owendi, the structure allows members to select a plan that aligns with both their health needs and financial capacity.
“This is a landmark step for the creative industry and a way to give our members peace of mind so that they can give us their best,” she said. “This initiative underscores FEFKA’s commitment to the welfare, sustainability, and professional growth of women filmmakers in Kenya, recognising that access to healthcare is a critical pillar in building a resilient creative industry.”
Founded by Owendi in 2022, FEFKA is an association that empowers and supports female voices in film in Kenya. In September 2025, the organisation also entered into an agreement with FIDA Kenya to offer its members access to legal aid and psycho-social support, as part of efforts to create safer spaces for women filmmakers.
